Last night in Antigua

While it was entirely possible to stay in Hostel El Retiro for more night, I really felt like it was time for me to finally move on for Honduras. However, the slight fly in the ointment is that I had to return to either Flores or Antigua. Feeling like I at least could rely on Chisubin being open on a Wednesday, I opted to return to Antigua. Plus Antigua is closer to Copan, Honduras than Flores is. Flores would be great if I wanted to head straight for the Bay Islands, but I really did want to see Copan.

My bus was supposed to get to my hostel around 8:00am. At 8:40am it showed up. Then we had a flat tire. Luckily for me, this ended up being an interesting twist of fate. I ended up meeting several people who shared the same philosophies on life, globalization, farming, the environment, and how we wanted to live our lives. Even though I didn’t spend the entire ride back to Antigua with them (they were headed to Flores), I couldn’t help but feel entirely grateful.

Before I left, I lamented that my hometown had a significant lack of people who I was inspired by. Here while traveling I am meeting loads of other people who looked at their options in frount of them and decided none of them were good enough. And they left their responsibilities behind to figure out what they were capable of. At the end of the day that is what I love about traveling. It not only gives you the opportunity to talk to like minded individuals, but also people who have similar passions as yourself. This more than adequately makes up for any weirdos you meet while traveling.

After we lost those travelers headed to Flores our new driver ended up playing what can only be described as cheesy music from the 80s and 90s. I’m talking Bryan Adams (a Canadian stand by), Celine Dion (let’s not go there), Betty Davis Eyes, Total Eclipse of the Heart, Every Breathe you Take, And I Will Always Love You. My fellow Canuck traveler and the guy from Colorado ended up singing along in an impromptu sing-a-long. It was one of those strange circumstances that I thought could never possibly have in real life, yet here I was on a bus to Antigua singing Bryan Adam’s “Heaven”.

Made it back to Antigua with just enough time to find my hostel and book my ongoing bus to Copan, Honduras. Unfortunately it was at 4:00am and that was going to hurt tomorrow. I also had time to make it back to the student house and say a final goodbye to Gladys, including some awesome photos of karate moves and Gladys wearing a penguin hat. Definitely a great way to finish off the night. But it was just as hard to say goodbye to her this time, and it was made worse by her telling me my Spanish sucked and that I needed to take more lessons.
